UNAIDS applauds Uzbekistan for removing restrictions on entry, stay and...

GENEVA, 21 October 2013—The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes the recent lifting of all restrictions on entry, stay and residence for people living with HIV in Uzbekistan. The reforms were passed by Parliament in August of 2013 and signed by the President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, on 23 September 2013. “I welcome this important milestone in Uzbekistan and I hope this will encourage other countries to take similar action towards a world with zero HIV-related stigma and discrimination,”

Greek Court Failed to Uphold HIV-positive Worker’s Right to...

On 3 October 2013, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) held that the failure by the Greek Court of Cassation to condemn a private company’s dismissal of an employee because he was HIV-positive, was a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR). Specifically, the Court considered that the failure amounted to a violation of his right to protection from discrimination (article 14) taken together with his right to a private life (Article 8).

Avahan Aids initiative may have prevented 600,000 HIV infections in India

A programme in India may have saved around 600,000 people from becoming infected with HIV over the course of a decade, according to a new report. Avahan, the India AIDS Initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and launched in 2003, aimed to prevent HIV transmission in the general population through a comprehensive HIV prevention programme including the promotion of condoms among the people at most risk – female sex workers, high risk men who have sex with men and intravenous drug users
