After anti-gay law, new bill threatens fight against HIV in Uganda

By Jenny Lei Ravelo Three months after it was signed by President Yoweri Museveni, the real implications of Uganda’s controversial anti-gay law are starting to be truly felt by the international aid community. Donors have cut or redirected aid, some implementers and health workers have been subject to raids and harassment, and a growing number of members within the country’s LGBT community are finding it more difficult to get treatment against HIV and AIDS.

Bitter Injustice: Ugandan Nurse Imprisoned

––HIV-positive nurse sentenced to three years for workplace accident–– May 20, 2014––A Ugandan court has done the unthinkable: sentenced a hospital nurse living with HIV to three years in prison. The court found the nurse guilty of “negligence likely to cause transmission of a dangerous disease” because she may have mistakenly reused a needle that pricked her finger. Although she was never on trial for consciously attempting to do harm, local and international media continue to portray the charge and subsequent verdict as intentional.

NSWP Launches Global and Regional Reports Documenting Good Practice in Sex...

The Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP), implemented a global project to identify and document best practices undertaken by sex workers in carrying out programmes related to sex work and HIV; to identify and document issues of sex workers and their access to HIV‑related treatment and the impact of free trade on this access; and to identify and document the impact of programmes relating to HIV directed at sex workers which fail to include a human rights‑based approach.
